The Difference Between a Pretty Website and a Working One

You judge a pretty website by how it looks. You judge a working website by how much of the paid traffic turns into calls and bookings. When the campaigns are running and the lead count stays flat, the website is often where the return leaks out.

Key takeaways

  • The website decides how much of your ad and SEO traffic turns into leads. When it underperforms, every channel looks weaker than it is.
  • A working site tells visitors what you do and where you do it on the first screen, and gives them one consistent button to act on.
  • On mobile, the chance of a bounce rises 32% as load time goes from one second to three.
  • A Calgary emergency restoration company went from 12 to 15 qualified leads a month to 83 after a rebuild focused on conversion. See the case study.

The gap between the two comes down to a few decisions most redesign briefs never mention.

A Calgary law firm launches a new website. It takes a few weeks and several thousand dollars, and everyone who sees it says it looks great. The firm points its Google Ads at the new homepage and keeps paying for every click. Three months later, the phone rings as often as it did before, and the contact form has 10 submissions to show for it.

Nothing on the site is broken. The ads still bring people in. The site doesn’t turn them into clients.

This is the difference between a pretty website and a working one. You judge a pretty website by how it looks. You judge a working one by what visitors do on it. It’s the problem clients ask us to fix more than any other, and they rarely call it a design issue. They say the website isn’t doing much for them.

What they mean is that the marketing budget isn’t coming back. The ads and the SEO send people to the website. If the site doesn’t convert them, every channel looks weaker than it is, and the budget conversation starts with cutting spend instead of fixing the page.

More Than a Pretty Website

Design matters. Carleton University researchers found that people judge a website’s visual appeal within 50 milliseconds of seeing it. That first impression counts, and an outdated or messy site loses visitors before they read a sentence. A good one buys you a few more seconds. After that, the visitor starts trying to use the site.

Most redesign briefs ask for new colours and fonts and a more modern layout. Few say what a visitor should do on the homepage or what the site needs to achieve for the business.

What “Working” Means

A working website does six things:

  • Says what you do in the first few seconds. A visitor can tell what the business offers and where it operates without scrolling.
  • Has one obvious next step. Pick one button, such as “Book a Free Consultation,” and make it look and read the same on every page.
  • Works on mobile first. Phones account for over 40% of web traffic in Canada. On a phone, the number should be one tap away and the form should take seconds to fill in.
  • Loads before visitors give up. A perfect PageSpeed score is optional. A blank screen on a phone loses the visitor.
  • Answers the questions your customers have. Price ranges, service areas, timelines, proof, hours, and location: the questions your sales team hears every week.
  • Can be measured. You track every call and form submission by page and by campaign, so you can see which spend brings in leads and which brings in nothing.

None of this shows up in a mockup, which is why redesign briefs miss it.

Common Website Mistakes That Hurt Conversions

The headline that says nothing. An elegant headline over a full-width photo looks premium and tells a visitor nothing about what you do. Most visitors never scroll far enough to find out.

Start with Trust
After

The second headline tells visitors what the company does and where, before they scroll.

Light grey text on white. The light grey body text looks clean and modern in the mockup but is hard to read for some people on the phone, and it fails accessibility and colour contrast. The lightest grey we use for body text is #666666, so it’s easy to read.

Contact button changes on every page. “Get in Touch,” “Let’s Talk,” “Start Your Project.” Each new label makes visitors wonder whether it leads somewhere different. We pick one button text, such as “Book a Free Consultation,” and use it in the header, the hero, and every section that asks for contact, with the same high-contrast colour each time.

Obvious stock photos. Visitors spot stock and AI photos fast, and the business looks less real for it. On service websites, real photos of the team and finished work build more trust, even phone photos.

Long form. We keep contact forms to four fields: name, phone, email, and message. We add more only when the sales team needs the information to qualify a lead. Every extra field is another reason to leave the page.

Hidden tap-to-call phone number on mobile. Every site we build has a tap-to-call number in the mobile header. It’s one of the quickest fixes, and it’s the first thing we check at sign-off.

A Faster Website Starts Here

Most people treat load time as a developer problem. The design phase decides most of it, with choices like a full-screen background video or a stack of uncompressed 3MB images.

On mobile, every extra second costs you visitors you already paid to bring in. Google found that the chance of a bounce rises by 32% as page load time goes from 1 second to 3 seconds.

Our fix list is short: compressed WebP images, SVG icons, two or three font families, and no background video on mobile.

What Fixing Looks Like

Before. A Calgary emergency restoration company came to us with a site that looked good. Their paid traffic was landing on a single page, and it brought in 12 to 15 qualified leads a month. The ads were sending homeowners in, and most of them left without calling.

What we did. Our content, paid media, SEO, and design teams rebuilt the site together. They wrote a page for each emergency type, added a sticky call button on desktop and mobile, and compressed every image. The design had one job: give a homeowner with a flooding basement the fastest path to a phone call.

After. Between November 2025 and mid-2026:

Is It Pretty or Working?

Pick up your phone, open your homepage, and answer these:

  • Before you scroll down, can you tell what the company does and where?
  • How many seconds until you can read anything?
  • Can you call or book with one tap, from any page?
  • Does every button that asks for contact say the same thing?
  • Could a stranger find your prices and service area without emailing you?
  • Do you know how many leads each campaign’s landing page produced last month?

If you answered no to two or more, your website isn’t working yet.

A Website Should Bring In Business

The Calgary restoration company needed a website that stated what they do in one line and made it easy to call from a phone. Once it did, qualified leads went from 12 to 15 a month to 83.

At GrowME, this work runs through the GrowMEthod, our proprietary framework. Strategy creates direction. Acquisition brings the right market in. Conversion turns attention into opportunity. Optimization shows what is working, improves performance, and guides scale.
